1Epidemiology of gynaecological cancers

Epidemiology is the basic science underpinning public health and clinical medicine. It describes the occurrence of health-related states or events (incidence, prevalence), quantifies the risk of disease (relative risk) and its outcome (prognosis, survival, mortality), and postulates causal mechanisms for disease in populations (aetiology, prevention). The main function of epidemiology is to provide evidence to guide public heath policy and clinical practice to protect, restore and promote health. The applications of epidemiology can be summarized as follows:
